Here is what society needs. These are examples of needs of societies. A Society in this context is represented by the majority of the population.
The need for privacy
The need for Freedom of Speech
The need for free communication
The need for history
The need for a diverse culture
The need for technological development
blablalba those into political sciences can do this…
The purpose of this document is to shortly illustrate the needs of our contemporary society in the context of the present project. In this text we will not regard «society» as being all people in a community, but only people actively engaged social interaction through modern digital methods (i.e. internet). Please bare in mind that even today this segment represents more than 85% of the total population of Norway.
The first step is to aknowledge that the needs of society are based on and similar in nature, but not the same as the needs of the individual. In order to outline the needs of society we can start by analysing how the needs of the individual translate into societal needs. Many sociologists and psychologists have published relevant and comprehensive papers regarding the needs of individuals, but for simplicity purposes we will only use the needs as formulated by Abraham Maslow in his well-known pyramidal representation.
The basic human needs are the drivers of any society, but they only justify the existence of the basic societal structures, which are not of interest for our purposes. The existence of the more complex societal structures can be explained only by the deeper human needs, such as the need for friendship, group belonging, respect of/by others. We can easily deduct that these individual needs can only be satisfied if society provides access to free, easy and unhindered communication. Only through free (fri, not gratis) communication can society cater to these individual needs, therefore we can identify this as being one of the basic needs of society. Any kind of censure or restrictions on communication will inevitably be detrimental to it’s a society’s individuals, as it will hinder the fulfillment of their basic needs. Since all communication has as it’s source a basic human need we can automatically state that there is no «unecesarry» communication.
The deepest individual human needs such as the achievement of creativity, morality, understanding, and other general intellectual needs explain a large part of our current society. These deep individual needs create yet more societal needs: Unrestricted access to information.
