Live performances

A live perfomance is the direct communication without intermediary distribution technology.  This include everything from two people talking to a stadium rock concert. Examples include

  • Concerts
  • Book readings
  • Conferences and presentations
  • Classroom (education)

Peer to peer distribution

P2P where the users themselvs distribute or market the content. Viral distribution is recognised by a many-to-many relationship

Direct peer to peer distribution

Where the content is distributed from one peer to another. Examples include FTP, Torrent, Kazaa, LimeWire, own sites and blogs etc

Referencing

Where content is somewhere else, and users link or otherwise refer to the specific content. Word of mouth, blogs etc

Channel distribution

Broadcast

Direct distribution through mass media channels. Mass media channels is recognised by a one-to-many relationship. Since bandwith in any form is scarce, mass media is considered to be pre-filtering content
TV
TV channels distributed through TV reserved frequency spectrums, cable and satellite. TV is often restriced by location with limited global reach, except for some TV channels.
Radio
Radio is localised

Outlets

Physical stores with limited shelf space. Traditionally does not sell the content itself, but rather the physical media in which the content is housed. Examples include books, optical media (CD/DVD/Blue-Ray), newspapers, magazines, paper comics

Digital distributors

Digital distributors that sell only digital content. Shelf space is unlimited (limited only by bandwidth and storage, which is moving towards free). Distribute only digital content. Examples include Spotify, Internet Archive, SourceForge, iTunes

Digital distributors that sells the physical media. The actual store has unlimited shelf space, but is restricted by logistics and warehouse storage. Examples include CDon.com etc

Hybrid distributors

Online distributors that sell content in both digital and physical form. Examples include Amazon, Platecompaniet

Libraries

Libraries and librarians is a race of their own, and cannot be bulked together with commercial distributors
